Chinese New Year 2009 I am personally not a big fan of CNY and the only thing that I look forward to during this time is the public holidays we get to enjoy (although just 2 days). CNY is just a time of getting tired and growing fat with all the visiting and new year goodies. This is the first year we did not have Grandma with us during this festive season and CNY will never be the same without her. *sob* 27.01.09 (Tuesday) The second day started later for us with only 2-3 houses to visit on my stepdad’s side. I joined Luffs and his family at his 2nd Uncle’s place later in the afternoon. As usual, I was watching TV and munching on the new year goodies while the rest was gambling. The whole group of us then made our way to Luffs’ 1st Uncle’s house for dinner and of course more gambling! I forgot to take photos the whole day! Oh my~ ************************** 26.01.09 (Monday) The first day of CNY is usually spent visiting relatives on my mum’s side - The only difference this year is we did not have to go bai nian with Grandma. We went to a few houses and Luffs joined us half way. Below are some photos we took ourselves (that explains why the photos only show our big heads!) - OPPZ! Maggie Jie and I did not take photos with our parents this year~ The day ended with a dinner at Luffs’ house with his family and relatives. Happy Boy was there and I was watching CJ7 with him, his mummy and Luffs while the rest was gambling. ************************** 25.01.09 (Sunday) Luffs came over to drive us to Choa Chu Kang Cemetery and Mount Vernon Columbarium and it was almost 1pm when we were done with these two places. Lunch was settled at Casuarina Curry Restaurant (a.k.a. The Prata Shop) - My family frequent that place a lot because it has long been known to serve the best prata in Singapore and Maggie Jie and I love their ikan bilis bee hoon goreng~ After that, the rest of the day was spent at home preparing for the steamboat reunion dinner. I bought Calmex (Mexico) abalone for our reunion dinner this year, but mum decided to use the ones my uncle gave instead - Calmex (Australia) and New Moon (Australia) abalone. Steamboat reunion dinner always comes with shark’s fin soup prepared by mum! My mother prepares the best steamboat and shark’s fin soup! REALLY~ I am not kidding! Hahaha… Even my cousins also agreed! My uncle and his family joined us for this year’s reunion dinner. (Was too busy drinking the delicious shark's fin soup, so did not take any photo... Below is a photo of the uncooked shark's fin.) We proceeded to Sinflora to buy CNY flowers after a hearty meal - It is a tradition for my uncle and his family to go there after their reunion dinner every year, but it was my first time there and I was amazed by the many types of flowers they sell. My camera was left at home, so I did not take any photos of the flowers. At about 12 midnight, Luffs and I drove to Johor Bahru to pump petrol and wash the car in preparation for the new year! It was the first time I see the Woodlands Checkpoint, the Causeway and the Malaysian CIQ Complex so empty. It took us only about 1 hour to finish everything and get home. ************************** 24.01.09 (Saturday) I finally got down to watching 10 Promises To My Dog after buying the DVD some months back. Although I am not a dog lover, I was interested to see how a puppy could help a 14-year-old girl cope with her mother's death. The below 10 points are what the girl's mother told the girl when she wanted to keep the puppy as her pet. " If you want to keep her (the puppy), you must know the '10 promises'. [1] Listen patiently to what I have to say. [2] Trust me - I am always on your side. [3] Play with me alot. [4] Don't forget that I have feelings too. [5] Let's never fight - Someday I'll win. [6] If I don't obey you, I have a good reason. [7] You have school and friends - I only have you. [8] Stay my best friend even when I'm old. [9] I'll only live for about 10 years, so let's make every moment count, every moment together. [10] Never forget our time together - When my time comes, please be by my side. These are the 10 promises. " This year, Mum invited our relatives over to our house for an early reunion dinner. We ordered buffet because there are simply too many of us to sit around the dining table for steamboat. Just realized I did not take any decent photos that evening other than those of the food. Neo Garden Catering is the caterer we normally order from, but this time round we tried some other dishes recommended by Elaine. CNY Package C Seafood Yong Chow Fried Rice Pacific Clam with Beancurd Fish with Celery Curry Chicken Cereal Prawn Breaded Scallop & Sotong Yu Tiao Spring Roll & Crab Pincers Yan Paste with Gingko Nut Mum also pre-ordered 100 pieces of fish otar (70 spicy and 30 non-spicy ones) from this shop at Jalan Kayu - Hiang Soon (Otar) Food Catering, so Luffs drove us there at about 4pm to collect our order. They sell very nice otar at 40 cents per piece. On top of that, Mummy Doris made abacus seeds to add to the buffet spread! This is an auspicious Hakka dish made out of yam and is not easily available at the food centres in Singapore because it requires a lot of preparation. This dish got its name from the pieces of ring-like yam that look like the beads of an abacus. Other ingredients include minced pork and dried prawns and it is best eaten with freshly-pounded chilli. Kelvin kor also brought salmon sashimi over - He bought the sashimi from Fassler Gourmet Singapore which sells with over 200 smoked and value added seafood products at cheaper rates. The sashimi got wiped out even before I could take any photo. Hahaha~ The collage below is done using the photos off their website. Maggie Jie, Luffs and I helped mum clean up the place after everyone has left. Maggie Jie and Luffs scrubbed the corridor and the lift landing while I only help fetch pails of water from the toilet to outside the house (better than not helping I guess). ************************** That’s all folks! That was how I spent my long CNY weekend. Sorry for the long entry… YAWNZ! |
