CNY Is Just 2 Days Away!

Things To Say When Lo Hei-ing
(8 Days Issue No. 953/4 - Pg 40)

Yu Sheng means raw fish, and also “abundance of wealth and long life.”

When the dish is placed on the table, greet guests by saying 恭喜发财 Gong Xi Fa Cai and 万事如意 Wan Shi Ru Yi, which means which means “Wishing all prosperity, and may all your wishes be fulfilled”.

Add the raw fish to the platter, and say 年年有余 Nian Nian You Yu and 有余有生 You Yu You Sheng. This means “Wishing you all abundance in the new year”.

Gesture towards the fish roe and say 大吉大利 Da Ji Da Li, which means “Wishing all lots of luck and good fortune”, before spreading it over.

Point to the shredded carrot and white radish and say 鸿运当头 Hong Yun Dang Tou and 青春美丽 Qing Chun Mei Li. This wishes your guests eternal youth and beauty.

Point to the lettuce and cabbage in the platter, and say 风生水起 Feng Sheng Shui Qi and 步步高升 Bu Bu Gao Sheng. This is for prosperity and promotion in business.

Add the sesame seeds and peanuts, and say 金银满屋 Jin Yin Man Wu, which literally means gold and silver fill your house.

Scatter the crunchy golden crackers and say 遍地黄金 Pian Di Huang Jin, which means that the floor will be filled with gold.

Pour the oil and sauce in, circling them over the platter to increase wealth from all directions. Say 一本万利 Yi Ben Wan Li and 财源广进 Cai Yuan Guan Jin.

Start tossing!
