Bumming No More On the morning of 28th April 09, I received a call from HR OCBC Bank requesting me to go for an interview on 29th April 09. My initial feeling was more of surprised than happy. Why so? I only submitted the application the day before, together with a small write up on how I could leverage on my past experience working in the bank to help succeed in this particular role that I applied for. Oh my, they are efficient! ------------------------------------------ 29th April 09 came and my interview was scheduled at 1.30pm. Having the habit of wanting to be punctual, I set off from my house at 11.45am for OCBC Building @ 65 Chulia Street. Actually wanting to be punctual was 1 point, the other was because I wanted to find an open air parking so I could use coupons instead of paying from my cashcard. Damn, it is expensive parking in town! Upon reaching OCBC Building at about 12.15pm, I took a turn into Philips Street and well well LUCKY me! A vehicle was just about to leave that parking lot. Good for me because I need not fret over waiting too long for a parking space. I quickly parked my vehicle and took some time to relax myself in the car. (Sheesh, outside was HOT!) That was when I texted Lingz telling her I was lucky to get a parking lot without waiting. Her reply reads "Lady luck is on ur side... =) Chill, dun b nervous wor. Jia you!" (exact message). Concurring with her message, I too feel perhaps luck was on my side. Pardon me if this gets too boring. 1pm, time for me to go for the interview although my interview was at 1.30pm. There were already 3 other candidates there for the interview when I reached the HR Department. I thought to myself, "Sheesh, I've gotta compete with them". Soon, it was my turn. Seated down were 2 interviewers and it all begun… Trust me, it was one of those few times where I actually felt nervous over an interview. True enough, the questions in the interview were not anything I expected. The questions asked by the male interviewer could not be answered with 'going around the bush' or indirect answers and his expression / questions reminded me of Simon Cowell! After a grueling 30 minutes, the interview was finally over and I was requested to wait outside. Walking out of the interview rooms, I realized all the other interviewees had left the premise. While waiting, I sat comfortably on the sofa and pondered on how I answered those questions - Whether they were correctly answered or did I say anything for the interviewers to minus points. A quick 5 minutes later, the male interviewer walked out presumably heading for the toilet. As he passed me, he asked "Kelvin, do you feel lucky today?" and I replied "Err… Ya, kind of… Haha!" - Like what kind of reply right? The female interviewer then called for me to enter into another discussion room. She (the interviewer) said, "After discussing with XXX, we immediately find that you possess the right qualities that we are looking for. Kelvin, the letter of offer is now on the table. Are you willing to accept it?" I was like woooooo what values do I have to make you make a decision so hastily? I did not immediately accept the offer as I felt it was only right of me to discuss it with Lingz since we are now husband and wife. I actually do not believe in having luck or doing certain things to boost one's luck but in this particular instance, everything might have happened because of luck? [1] I'm lucky to have a supportive wife. [2] I'm lucky to have very supporting families. [3] I'm lucky to have been chosen / picked for an interview. [4] I'm lucky to have found that parking lot. [5] I'm lucky to have emerged winner amongst the 3 other interviewees. [6] Lastly, I'm lucky to have found a job. With a job + income, I can now save for my Chinese customary marriage. Hope 2010 is still within reach! |
